Today marks 91 years since Young Africans Sports Club was founded, founded in 1935 a club that began as a simple idea, grew into a powerful movement, and became a symbol of pride for millions of Wananchi across Tanzania, Africa, and beyond.
As I reflect on this milestone, I feel deep gratitude. This club has never been defined by trophies alone. It has always been defined by its culture, its identity, its unity, and the belief that football can transform lives, communities, and even nations.
Yanga was more of a platform for self-expression, community pride, and a tool for liberation. It became closely linked with the nationalist movement and aligned with TANU during the struggle for independence. The party even adopted our green and yellow colors. This history reminds us that Yanga has always represented something greater than football. It has represented identity, courage, and ambition.
Through different eras, leaders, and challenges, the club has remained strong. From our first chairman to this present generation, the spirit of Young Africans has never faded. It has evolved, matured, and expanded.
When I stood before our members in 2022 and asked for the opportunity to lead this great institution, I had one clear purpose: to transform Young Africans into not only a winning team on the pitch, but a modern and sustainably structured club competitive at home, respected across Africa, and recognized globally.
And Over the past three years, we have moved with clarity and intention. Firstly, we modernized governance and administrative systems to match professional standards and ensure accountability. Secondly, we strengthened our commercial foundation to build financial sustainability while protecting our identity as a people’s club.
Moreover, we elevated the Yanga brand and embraced digital transformation to bring the club closer to its supporters across Tanzania and around the world. In addition to that, we launched Yanga Soccer Schools as a strategic investment in youth development, ensuring that the future of the club is built from within. On the sporting side, we have qualified for the CAF Champions League group stage three consecutive times a historic achievement for Tanzanian football and a clear sign of our continental competitiveness.
These are not small milestones. We have shifted from short-term survival to long-term planning. And none of this would be possible without our fans., You remain the heartbeat of this club. Your loyalty gives meaning to every victory and strength during every challenge.
As we look ahead, our ambitions are clear. We are committed to building a modern home stadium at Jangwani that reflects our history and our future. At the same time, we are strengthening our youth development model so that Yanga becomes a true football factory for Tanzania and Africa. Furthermore, we are determined to achieve greater continental success and elevate the image of Tanzanian football globally. Equally important, we continue building financial strength to guarantee independence, stability, and sustainable growth for generations to come.
On this 91st anniversary, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the founders who ignited this journey, to the legends who carried the badge with honor, to our partners who believe in the vision, and to every Mwananchi who carries Young Africans in their heart.
Happy 91st Anniversary, Young Africans SC.
Daima Mbele, Nyuma Mwiko.
